The Dermaroller (Micro-Surgical Skin Needling)

What is Micro-surgical skin needling?
Micro surgical skin needling, also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) and Medical Skin-Needling, is considered to be a relatively new concept within the plethora of aesthetic treatment options available for skin rejuvenation. It is aimed at stimulating the body’s own ability to repair tissue and enhance collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, skin laxity and scarring such as that caused by acne or chicken pox. By minor traumatising the skin with micro needles, the body is stimulated into providing collagen and elastin to aid recovery to these sections resulting in new skin cells being formed, repairing and rejuvenating.

How is the treatment administered?

Skin needling is administered in a very safe and precise way by using a standardised needling device that only penetrates the exact depth required. The Genuine Dermaroller is a single use, sterile roller that has many tiny needles and is rolled lightly over the surface of the skin to create many microscopic channels or columns, approximately 0.07- 0.25mm wide at various depths of penetration within the papillary dermal layer of the skin where collagen and elastin fibres are located. These minute punctures close over almost immediately. This stimulation to the dermis encourages the body to produce new collagen and elastin which generate skin cells to literally “repair” themselves, thus the skin becomes thicker, plumper and therefore more youthful looking.
Treatment sessions with the Dermaroller take around 30 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. A topical anaesthetic is applied to the skin to numb the area being treated in order to avoid any discomfort. The practitioner then lightly rolls the skin with the Dermaroller in order to stimulate the blood cells. The skin will be pink or red in appearance immediately following treatment; this will subside within 1-2 hours. The skin will feel tighter for the next couple of days. There is no reason for clients to suffer any down time from this treatment.

Are there any side effects?
Potential complications include minor flaking or dryness of the skin. Hyperpigmentation (darkening of certain areas of the skin) can occur very rarely and usually resolves after a month. If you have a history of cold sores, this could possibly flare up after treatment.

What can I expect from the treatment?
It can take between 4 – 8 weeks before visible signs of skin regeneration are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing a gradual enhancement. A single treatment can produce noticeable results, however a programme of 2 – 5 treatments spaced 2 – 3 months apart is often recommended to achieve optimum results. The specific number of sessions required will depend on the area being treated and the severity of the indication, as well as the level of natural response from the individual’s body.
